Challenge yourself it’s worth it!
Mawson Trail is a mountain biking trail which we started in Adelaide and cycled to the finish at Blinman Hotel, Blinman - a distance of over 900+ Kms. We rode this as part of an organised tour with Bike SA held every 2 years. The trail has every condition you could possibly imagine, rough, hard, huge climbs with "holy hell" descents, single track sections, gravel roads & trails through forests and farming tracts. It’s exhilarating fun and scenery you will never forget. The Flinders Ranges were both awesome & rugged. You can do this yourself with good planning however we preferred the support & great company with BikeSA. Some months are too hot & you need to get a key to open gates so preplanning is essential. A dual suspension mtn bike would be great but we rode hard tails and survived. Camping out was cold at night in May 2017. Go on put this on your bucket list if you dare!
Rode the entire 900km of the Mawson Trail (over many short and long weekends), and it was a fantastic way to see South Australia’s countryside. Starting along the Torrens in the Adelaide Hills, through the Barossa and Clare Valleys to the mid-North and then the Flinders, the trail had it all. Predominantly on lowly used gravel roads or tracks, the trail is safe (aside from the odd Kangaroo jumping out in front of you). Plenty of signage throughout, and some good maps to use. And plenty of great accommodation spots along the way to choose as you experience country living.
