Location / Nearby Headland Park

Description

Headland Park in Mosman has some of the most stunning vantage points anywhere on Sydney Harbour with uninterrupted views across to Manly, Vaucluse and to the city of Sydney. Today, visitors can discover the rich military history of the area year round. With arguably some of the best views in Sydney, Headland Park which includes Chowder Bay, Middle Head and Georges Heights was once used by the military as a lookout spot to see approaching enemy ships. It's home to a WWI-era military hospital-the only remaining building complex of its kind in NSW-as well as concealed gun pits, underground tunnels, barracks and other fascinating military structures. Visitors can explore the area's defence heritage and take in the spectacular views.

Award Winning Works from Sculptures By The Sea

Headland Park has a lot to offer but one of the features that I like best is the collection of giant abstract sculptures in the Artist Precinct area.
The sculptures are all winning works from past Sculptures By the Sea exhibitions and over the last several years, they have been gifted to the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and installed them here. It’s like an open air gallery.
I was particularly struck by Peter Lundberg’s ‘Ring’, a large bronze twisted and bent circular shape. It is intended to evoke nature and industry. However, sitting as it does, with the ocean visible behind it, I immediately thought of the jaws of a giant shark, rising up out of the waters.
Several ceramicists, potters and artists have also set up working studios here and you can wander and look at some of them. It’s a great spot to mooch around for a while and then go for a coffee or lunch at Frenchy’s, the charming little café on the edge of the park.

Trees, Bush, Parkland & Water views ... & coffee close too.

This is one of the hidden treats of Sydney Harbour.
A walk & ability to absorb the terrific fringes of the harbour ... still natural bushland or park.
The walk from Chowder Bay over Middle Head down to Balmoral is well worthwhile & rewards you with majestic panoramas en route.
Frenchys Cafe up top in Georges Heights or Burnt Orange near Middle Head oval are ideal refueling points.

Lots to see and do here

The whole headland complex with its links to some of Sydney’s best walking tracks should be on every travellers list. There are spectacular views of the harbour and as it is very high you can also see to Manly and the Northern Beaches. Stop for a bite at Frenchys.

A rich history.

We popped in havre after a day at the zoo. There is lots to see, from parkland, lookouts, and the WW1 era military hospital. This is now a myriad of small businesses in the original buildings. A really nice place to visit.

Great family park

This park is situated directly in front of the Sydney Heads and has fabulous views. There is a quaint gallery (MU Gallery) situated in the park together with a good family restaurant with outdoor seating which is great for children to run around.

Rancan Sisters Fitness - Hideaway

Hidden in the historic area of Headland Park near Mosman Sydney is a fitness studio owned by the former TV celebrities Adele & Lisa Rancan. They were known as the Rancan Sisters with wild curly hair and wearing lycra doing their aerobic routines for the morning television viewers.

Today they have a lovely modern studio offering fitness classes - Pilates Reformer, Barre, Cardio Power Plate, Spin and also do Yoga Kayaking in the summer at Balmoral Beach. I met Lisa & Adele Rancan who still look great and they showed me around - so friendly & helpful.

I decided to try their Pilates Reformer class (after an initial assessment - very professional) and signed up to a private lesson through their Rancan Sisters App. It was easy to do and I thought the same about the class until the next day when my muscles knew they had a work out.

The classes are predominantly woman who appear to want to keep this place a secret but now that I’ve found it perhaps more should know? There’s even a great French Cafe nearby called Frenchy’s and also a great place to relax after a workout.
